Design, Hybrid | 2020

This project was my graduation work in the Visual Communication program at PaTI. Built around a Hangeul typeface titled Face Typeface, inspired by human facial expressions, it explores the possibilities of experiencing type physically across various media. Originating from a sense of alienation I felt in 2019 while studying abroad in Taiwan and encountering unfamiliar characters, the project also serves as my own response to the question of whether a typeface can create a sense of intimacy even for those who cannot read it. The project includes an experimental film exploring the relationship between faces and letterforms, visual research combining the visual signs of the face with the function of type, wearable glasses based on the typeface, and a website where the typeface can be experienced online.

When reading faces, I see letters
The initial consonant, eyes
A vowel, nose
Last consonant, lips
The latter letter becomes the eyes of the former letter
A consonant is fluid, A vowel is solid
Thus, each phoneme becomes each countenance

이 프로젝트는 PaTI 한배곳 시각커뮤니케이션 과정의 졸업작품으로, 인간의 얼굴 표정에서 영감을 받은 한글 서체 ‘얼굴체(Face Typeface)’를 중심으로 서체의 신체적 경험 가능성을 다양한 매체를 통해 탐구한다. 2019년 대만에서 교환학생으로 지내며 낯선 문자를 마주했을 때 느꼈던 소외감에서 출발한 이 작업은, 서체가 그것을 읽지 못하는 이들에게도 친밀한 경험으로 다가갈 수 있는가에 대한 하나의 응답이기도 하다. 얼굴과 문자 형태의 관계를 탐구하는 실험 영상을 비롯해, 얼굴의 시각적 기호와 서체의 기능을 결합한 비주얼 리서치, 서체의 형태를 적용한 착용 가능한 안경, 그리고 웹에서 서체를 체험할 수 있는 웹사이트로 구성되어 있다.

얼굴을 읽을 때, 나는 글자를 본다.
초성은 눈,
중성은 코,
종성은 입.
뒤의 글자는 앞의 글자의 눈이 된다.
자음은 부드럽고, 모음은 단단하다.
그렇게 각각의 글자는 각각의 얼굴이 된다.
